WHAT IS A PENDANT LIGHT?
A Pendant light is a single, shaded light fixture that hangs from the ceiling, usually suspended by a cord, chain or metal rod. Pendant lights are often used in multiples, hung in a straight line over the area they are illuminating.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF PENDANTS?
Lighting pendants can be conventional, inverted, or a mini version. Conventional pendants hang with the glass opening facing down. Inverted pendants have the glass opening facing up. And, mini pendants are a smaller version of a conventional or inverted pendant.

WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTING DOES A PENDANT LIGHT SUPPLY?
Pendants supply ‘general lighting’ as well as ‘task lighting. Pendant lights could be hung up almost everywhere. But it is preferable to hang a specific type for a specific area/task.

WHERE ARE PENDANT LIGHTS USED?
Conventional pendants are commonly used in foyer areas, walkways, restaurant or bar tables, reception areas, and lounges of hotels.

Inverted pendants work well over a dining table, in a breakfast nook, or hung over a kitchen island. They can also be used over bedside tables or desks to save space and provide task lighting.

Mini Pendants add design and decoration to any room. They are usually hung in multiples over kitchen counters or bar areas. A single mini pendant can be used to create ambient light in a key spot.

Lighting is an important element for any room. It adds illumination, acts as a decorative piece, and creates a mood. Whether you choose to use track lighting, wall scones, floor lamps, chandeliers or any other type of lighting fixture, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.

You want to be sure your lighting flows with the design of the room, that it serves the purpose of illumination, and that it is efficient when it comes to energy consumption.

Tips for Light Fixture Placement

Replacing an old light fixture is an easy way to update the look of a room. There are a number of lighting options available that add style, create a focal point, and increase illumination.

Once you choose the light fixture that fits the room size, design, and your taste you will need to decide where to hang it. I have listed a few of the common hanging light fixtures and suggestions for their placement below.

Chandeliers
Chandeliers are an elegant way to light a dining room, entryway, or bedroom. They typically hang in the center of the object they are above (i.e. a table or bed). In general, chandeliers should be hung 32”-40” above the object below. If used in a high ceiling entry way, the chandelier should be about two thirds of away up, the bottom being no lower than 7 feet from the floor. When hanging, consider the weight of the light. Chandeliers tend to be heavier than most lights and might need the appropriate support system.

Pendants
Lighting pendants are becoming more and more popular. They add a sleek style with little glare from the shade of the light. Pendants can be hung over table tops, kitchen counter, bathroom vanities, game areas, or work areas. Similar small pendants can be grouped together in a line or circle pattern. Pendants should be hung centered above the object below, at the same height as the chandelier (32”-40” above the object).

Wall Scones
Wall scones are a great way to highlight a mirror or art piece. They are usually used in bathrooms, hallways, or entryways. Wall scones come in pairs, one hung on either side of the object. Hang wall scones 5 feet above the floor and 10 feet apart from each other, considering the size of the object. For fixtures that include wall scone lampshades, be sure the shades do not stick too far off the wall to obstruct walking and moving around.

Lighted Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans come in a variety of designs, many including a light fixture as well. They should be hung in the center of the room. The lighting fixture hangs the lowest from the fan and should be no lower than 7 feet from the floor.

How to Choose Lampshades

Some people may figure a lamp and a lampshade are inseparable from manufacturing on. This is not true. Many times, we may find the lamp to be desirable, but the lampshade just does not go well with our interior; the color is not wanted; the material is different than what is expected; etc.

The great news is that you don't have to maintain lampshades; you can decide to purchase replacement lampshades for table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, etc. You can purchase silk lampshades, fabric lampshades, plastic lampshades, etc.

Consider some tips while choosing on a lampshade that is best for you:

- Some choose lampshades that will fall about one-third to two-thirds length from the top of the lamp. There is no 'rule' when it comes to lampshades, but for aesthetic reasons, you may want to choose a shade that can completely cover the metal components at the top of the lamp.

- Traditionally, a consumer will keep in mind the shape of the lamp in regards to the lampshade; a round lamp is complemented by a circular shade, an angular lamp is topped with an angular-shaped shade, and so on. This does not need to be a rule either; yet, a contrast theme is suggested to be implemented throughout the room if the shapes differ.

- Lampshades come in a variety of colors, yet their function should be considered before selecting a hue. A darker shade will not give off as much light. You may want to decide on a lighter color if the lamp is used for reading or viewing purposes.

- As previously stated many lampshades are available to the consumer such as fabric lampshades, clip-on lampshades, hard-back lampshades, and more. Think about how the material will endure and need maintenance before making a purchase. Some shades may attract more dirt and dust than others, as well as be more difficult to clean due to its contours.
